Each year, the Hot Springs County Historical Society plans a day-long trek to one historic area or site.
This year, they chose the Arapaho Ranch Field Station, and we were thrilled to host their group for a tour of the Arapaho Ranch headquarters (formerly the headquarters of Padlock Ranch).
A quick history: The Arapaho Ranch was purchased by the Northern Arapaho Tribe in 1940. The purchase encompassed 8 ranches total, including the famous Padlock Ranch, all of which were settled soon after the Indian Wars had raged through the Great Plains of North America.
What made the Historical Society’s trip particularly special was that many of the attendees have family ties to those 8 ranches, such the Odde Ranch and the Duncan Ranch.
As they re-visited their childhood haunts, members of the Historical Society shared stories about what these ranches looked like decades prior, and how they recalled spending time there in their youth. Thanks to their generosity in sharing these memories, we’ve collected even more valuable information about the history of Arapaho Ranch Field Station.
